What TV Shows Are You Watching?

Discussion in 'Entertainment' started by cmdrmonkey, Jan 24, 2011.

  1. I watched the first episode of Cowboy Bebop. I like it. It seems to have captured the feel of the Anime which I thought might be too difficult to pull off. I'm not a die hard fan of the original so an adaptation is okay with me. I'm still not sure about the cast choices but so far it's working.

  2. I watched the first 3 episodes of Wheel of Time. It was OK but definitely not the next Game of Thrones. One of the early scenes with witches/ sorceresses/ enchanted gender studies professors/ whatever they are really laid on the misandry to a degree that I wondered if they were going to start talking about the patriarchy and "mansplaining" before she zapped the loon they chased down. Magic did not look particularly good compared to something like Dark Crystal: AoR and other recent shows that used special effects far more effectively. The characters are OK but not many standouts. It's too early to know what direction they're taking things, but these are the only episodes available so far. I also have not read this series of books the show is based upon. I'll probably continue watching to see what direction they take with this. I don't see this turning into the next Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones or anything close to it, but it's OK so far.

  3. I got about that far and stopped. I am obviously not the intended audience. And it’s been a preachy couple of years already.

  4. That's an interesting scene that isn't well explained. The Ajah (sorceresses) come in several colors and each color has a purpose. Those in the first scene were Red Ajah and their job is to hunt down men who channel the "One Power" because those men will always go insane and become a threat. The Red Ajah are for the most part, man haters. It's not subtle. Keep in mind these books were written over 30 years ago. I don't believe the author intend to be preachy. I think he intended to create a group of unlikeable bad guys. He succeeded, but I guess now, 30 years later, this might be coming off as woke. To be honest Amazon might have intended this to be "woke" but I don't know yet. They have already made several changes with the story that has a lot of the hard core fans enraged. As a fan of anything Fantasy, I think it's pretty good so far.

    Cowboy Bebop

It's decent. Kind of like a goofier version of FireFly. I like that one of the main characters is a corgi.

I never watched the anime it's based on so I have no point of comparison.

  6. I just read Amazon is going to make a Mass Effect’ TV series. That will be interesting.

  7. Fair enough. I might give it a chance. I’m usually a sucker for magic and witchy shit.

  8. That's kind of like watching the Star Wars Holiday Special before watching Empire Strikes Back. The animated version is considered to be among the best animated series ever made. I'm struggling to finish the first episode of the Netflix version, taking 2 breaks so far. It's probably going to have an excellent score though given the original composer is handling that.

  9. I'm coming into it with a clean slate and I think it's pretty good. In which case I'm sure the anime is excellent and something I should watch soon.

Ive seen 2 episodes now. I forgot to mention a lot of the technical work has been pretty solid. Some of the changes are peculiar. Jet is pretty good other than being race swapped for no apparent reason and Spike isn't bad other than being way too old (supposed to be 27) and the "Fearless" crap they've added. The fight scenes and martial arts are OK, which far exceeded my expectations. However, I absolutely despise their versions of Faye, Julia, and especially Vicious. When Faye encounters Vicious in the anime she looks absolutely paralyzed with fear after witnessing what he was capable of as he calmly introduces himself. He is a ruthless, brutal, and sadistic psychopath. The live action version is a groveling bitch.

  11. I never saw the anime either. Tried to years ago and recently but couldn’t get into it. Shows ok but nothing that special. Finished it a few days ago.

  12. I think it's the only anime series I've ever finished and maybe that's because it's not like tradition anime. It's more like some eastern anime guy's idea of a what a 90s western space opera should look like backed by a 70s Latin jazz sound track. Add the dog and whatever Edward is, and it just kind of works.

Chris Stuckmann gave a pretty fair assessment of the live action Cowboy Bebop series in a new video today that is less biased than I'm able to be on the topic.

I completely disagree with him about Faye, who he actually liked, but his take on Vicious was almost identical to my own and he even brought up and showed the same scene I referenced of Faye encountering Vicious in which she was absolutely terrified of him. Most of the scenes adapted from the original I've watched aren't bad; it's changes in certain characters and peculiar differences at key points I've found difficult to digest. I'm going to try to watch the rest with as open of a mind as I can manage.

  14. I watched a decent amount of anime a long, long time ago. But I can only remember the big name shows that were really well done for American audiences.

    Cowboy Bebop
    Trigun
    Samurai Champloo

The runaway hit in my era was Dragon Ball Z though!

  15. I must’ve watched some series. But alls I remember from the early days 20+ years ago are Akira, Ninja Scroll, and Ghost in the Shell. I think I got more Kung fu movies than anime in those pre streaming days.

  16. And Cowboy Bebop is already cancelled after one season.

  17. I figured it probably would be. Fans of the anime didn't like it and it was expensive to make.

  18. Plus it’s on Netflix, where new shows go to die.

  19. True. Sometimes I don't even want to start watching a show on Netflix until it gets a few season under it.

  20. Yeah. New Witcher comes soon. I feel like I’m ready to be hurt again.
