I traded in a NDS XL on a Vita yesterday at Best Buy. They were sold out of 8gig cards and the majority of games. And they had those cards and games in stock yesterday! Apparently it's a lot more popular than I realized. Oh well, I drove all over town and I managed to get a 8gig card and Little Deviants. That's not what I was after, but it's fun. I'm thinking that people who's gotten their feet wet playing moble phone games are grabbing this. The screen is bigger than any smart phones and it's still way more portable than a tablet. AND it has real power. I'm starting to think that Sony is going to win big in the portable market this time around.
I noticed if you want to get a another memory card, like the 8GB card, it may be well worth the money to get the 3G version of the vita. It bundles an 8GB memory, free ATT data session, and 1 free downloadable PSN game for only $50 more than the wifi vita. The 8GB memory card is $39.99 by itself!
I looked at it. It was 300 and the one that I got was 250. And the 8 gig card was only 30. I thought that I would fare better putting that extra $20 toward a game. Besides that 3g service was absurd. A 3 gig cap??? Are you kidding me? Totally useless for streaming movies. AT&T has got to get off of their high horse!
I had a go on a demo one. Wasn't really blown away, but the machine was limited by not having a memory card. Thing that annoyed me most was it kept freezing on different features to tell me it didn't have a card (movies and photos I think). Couldn't see any games that would grab me and the limited memory choices (16gb was the highest I saw, which is too small to me) made me decide against it.
Had a look and apparently the 32 GB version isn't available in Europe, which seems silly as you need a large amount of storage for these things IMO. I don't want to arse about managing memory.
Caved in and got one today; new disgaea and everybody's golf tempted me. Picked up the wifi version as I can use the 4s as a hot spot. I've currently got uncharted and golf, on the look out for disgaea and katamari in the shops. Got the 16gb card too, shame there's no 32gb ones.
My early verdict is a bit meh really. It's a nice machine and is obviously very capable but I'm not really feeling it. The touch controls on the games I've tried feel very tacked on and are actually detract from the games in the most part. It almost feels like they're forcing you to use them and in a very inconsistent way. It annoys me that you can't navigate the main screen at all with the stick on pad as its for no reason at all. Some option screens, you need the d-pad, others it's disabled. That gets very annoying. The few games I've tried remind me of the early PSP days, I.E worse versions of home console games. Uncharted looks nice but inferior to the PS3 version which I expected. The control aspect is really a step down though, with sticks not really matching up very well at with a proper pad. The fact they couldn't decide whether this was a control pad or touchscreen game makes for a lot of awkwardness. Something simple like the pool game hustle kings is a great example of how screwy the designers are being, with a godawful tutorial system that switches between different control methods between each lesson. The games seems much better when conventional controls are used but you're often forced to use touch controls which are far trickier to be precise with. With time, this machine could have potential but I wouldn't recommend it currently. Maybe everyone needs to realise they should play to its strengths in terms of controls rather than using gimmick touch inputs all the time.
Once Monster Hunter freedom 3 is announced for it, it will sell like hot cakes and I will be getting one straight away. Is Uncharted not worth getting on it then?
It's ok, not played a lot but it seems like a worse version of the ps3 games, especially in terms of controls. Probably worth a punt in the sales but I'd not recommend it at anywhere near full price. Got Disgaea 3 and Katamari on the way, looking forward to trying them.
I think I will wait for a while until it goes down in price and when more games come out for it. Only Uncharted and Disgaea interest me at the moment and I had Disgaea 3 on the PS3.
I played with a demo unit. Neat device but it's slow to load and I wouldn't pay the $40 price for the games.
I heard there was added stuff which wasn't to do with the PS3 game or addons. Those two games I will get back I am hoping MHF3 comes out as the PSP version is only out in Japan and some of the monsters are missing and only the 3DS version has them and new monsters, but the screen is too small for Monster Hunting for me. Remember FFX HD is coming out on the Vita too at some point.
The games come on cards so the loading is much better than the PSP; doubt a hacked one would improve it.
The PS Vita reminds me of my Atari Lynx back in the day. While the Lynx failed miserably, it still has a place in my heart as I played the shit out of it and made it worth while. Whilst everyone keeps talking about 'end of handheld gaming' (obviously not including smartphone gaming). I still am enjoying my Vita (mostly with Lumines though). I still have lots of games to finish but that damn Lumines game has made me an addict. "Future of the future"....amazing soundtrack in Lumines.
