Interesting. I now agree that the Scorpio is based on the RX 480 or the next one above that. DF has an article here. And that means that the Scorpio will be 2 generations behind the PC on launch. But the XB1 was what? 6 generations behind the PC? And where does the PS4 land in this power scale? 5 generations behind on launch?

  2. Like I've said before, MS has to use brute force because they don't have their own VR tech. They'll have to use something designed for a PC rig. Sony is likely to be just fine with lower specs and their own custom VR. And they're already showing games for VR at E3.

You do know that if Microsoft just uses that extra power for just VR or 4K, then they'll be handing the graphics win over to the Nintendo NX. And Microsoft knows this too.

When asked on Twitter if developers can instead go for 1080p with 60 frames per second and "massively upgraded visuals," Spencer replied, "We'll talk more about this later, but we never said we'd mandate 4K frame buffer, we won't."

  4. Sweet! Unlike the PS4 Pro, you won't need a 4K TV to see the improvements. It's looking more & more like a true next gen system.

  5. You don't on a PS4 either, games still get upgrades when running in 1080p mode.

Patcher agrees with you. The Scorpio's extra power won't matter.

Listen to him. The man's a god in this industry.

    official Scorpio specs.

This thing is a beast.. Well done M$. Very clever design and done in a really good way.

All comes down to price now.

  8. Did I hear that right? Microsoft hardcoded DX12 onto the chipset?

  9. RX480 is just shy of 6 TFLOPs. So basically it's got the equivalent of an 8GB RX480, a 2016 <$200 budget card. Meh. And watch them charge $500-600 for this thing.

That's a bit over the top, you're missing CPU, 4 More GB of DDR5, case, psu, motherboard, psu, controller, vapor chamber heatsink etc which will be part of cost.

  11. the real deal here is the memory bandwidth this thing has now. it's quite beastly. but as an outsider looking in, the software on the ps4 is more interesting.

$299 would be a fair price. This is basically what the Xbox One should have been at launch. And it could have been if they had used an R9 290/290X derivative with GDDR5 instead of the piece of shit GPU and slow RAM they went with.

For 2017 this is not impressive. I would expect GTX 1080 level perfomance if they are going to charge $500-600.

  13. DF was very impressed.

Only a GTX 1080 could match the Scorpio's performance on Forza 6.

  14. It makes sense. Polaris shows significant improvements with DX12.

Yes. DX12 is where it's at in high end PC gaming. But hardcoded on the chipset? It looks like all the developer has to do now is make some simple system calls to do what the PC (or the PS4) requires external libraries to do. Has any other company ever done this before?

  16. Looks like a very clever and efficient design. I'm expecting the price to be at least $500. I don't think they can go much higher, as I expect the Pro to drop to $350 to $300 by then. That's an interest market dynamic. If the games match the impressive design, I'll pick one up (whatever it's going to be called; I thought they'd name it before they went into such detail about the hardware specs). I also don't have a 4K disc player, so that would also be great for me.

I'm curious to see where the Switch is by that point, which from my perspective is extremely pricey when you include the price of controls and memory.

    Did you guys see this?

    I'm speechless.

And this had to be asked...

    Yeah. Better. LOL! o_O

  18. Didn't see any exclusive games in that presentation that blew me away and the $499 price... Yeah, I won't be bothering.

$500? That's way too expensive for something coming out this late in a generation.

PS4 Pro is nearly as powerful, has a far better lineup, and is available now for $100 less. Why would anyone buy this thing?

Also they've waited way too long to launch this. People were excited about Scorpio last year. By this fall, so much time will have passed that no one will give a crap. This needed to launch Q3 or Q4 2016. This is the same mistake they made with Windows Phone. People were excited about that, but then they took like two years after the previews to actually launch the phones and by that point everyone had bought iPhones and androids and no one cared.

  20. I wonder how many parents will confuse the Xbox one S with the Xbox one X. I'll stick to my PS4 and better game library power and better graphics mean nothing to me.
